WANDERERS DEFEAT OTAKI. By defeating Otaki on Saturday, Wanderers became the 1925 champions of the Horowhenua Senior Competition. As a final, the game was disappointing to say the least, and was easily one of the worst exhibitions seen locally this season. Otaki fielded a weak team and the play, on both sides was colourless and uninspiring and was certainly far removed from the standard of senior football.
The Blacks, playing with the sun alt their backs, quickly penetrated the weak spots in the defence and soon rattled up eleven points. . Over confidence cost them at least three more tries.
Corby was the first to open the scoring. Taking a pass from Lang he crossed wide out. Jacob goaled and Wanderers were five up after about 5 minutes play. Otaki then rushed play into the Blacks' 25, but Nicholson 'picking up smartly ran clean through the opposition, selling the dummy in all directions and was just hauled down within a few feet of the line only to be penalised for playing the bail on ground. Wanderers remained in the ascendancy but their attacks broke down repeatedly through faulty passing. Bennett, the Otaki half, marked, and Jacob taking his kick booted across the centre and the Black forwards carrying on, hustled over for Corby'to register his second try. Ta cob failed with the kick. Gleeson and Tahiwi then became associated in a movement that placed the Greens on the offensive. Otaki wore carrying the scrums and hooking cleanly, but from one of these Bennett was too slow and Jacob broke away. Running-'down the centre he sent on to Tatana who got over only to lose possession when in the act" of forcing. Almost immediately Graham set off and after beating a couple of men, transferred to Short, who in turn passed to Wilson who sent Ed gin ton over. Jacob again failed. Many were of the opinion that Short's pass to Wilson was forward, but what really happened was that a Green back in trying to intercept, knocked the ball back towards blown line. Otaki now rallied and Hakaraia was prominent and with a good dribble carried play on to Wanderers' line. The Green pack, openied out to their backs who all handled for the winger to score the best try of the match. Tuna failed to improve. From now on till half time Wanderers attacked, but careless play kept them out. After the resumption the Blacks were penalised under their own goal but Tuna made a wretched attempt with an easy kick. . The Greens kept up the pressure, but their efforts were no better than Wanderers' who had little difficulty in keeping them out. The game from now on was hardly worth describing in detail, the only bright feature being the Blacks' final try From a line out Tatana cleverly handed back 'to Lang who sent his • backs away. The ball went through the hands of Winiata, Nicholson, Wilson to Phillips, who shot over in the corner. Jacobs' kick fell short. Mr J. Sciascia, who refereed, blew the final whistle shortly after.
