Hawke’s Bay rugby representatives yesterday played tlie third match of | the season in defence of the Ranfurly i Shield, which they retained by 31 J points to 12. The weather, was windy I and cold and a heavy shower fell shortly before the match started, but j the wind dried the ground consider- > ably. The defenders lcicked-off against ] the wind. Within five minutes a kick- j through by Paewai was returned high | by Oughton. Kivell, who replaced l Xepia. slipped with the ball and be- ) fore he recovered tlie opponents were on him and Hiulett scored. Kilby converted. - Southland s—o.5 —0. Southland were taking advantage of the wind, kicking high and following up smartly and held'play in the Bay territory, but met solid defence. Mill got away from tne scrum and .turning defence into attack, ran well into the visitors’ territory. Others joined in the attack, but Grenside was grassed. Subsequently from the scrum Grenside ducked round on the open side and passed to M. Brownlie, to Ormond, to Mill. Blake missed is pass but Corkill came up and scored under the posts. Irvine missed the kick. Southland 5—S. Th fc visiting forwards were again in action from the kick-off and soon Bell took them to near the Bay line. From a scrum a kick took the ball to w-agliton who made an opening for Ottrey to score. Kilby missed Southland B—3. The Bay forwards were now doing well in the loose work nut the. battle against the wind made progress difficult. Eventual ly tour of them succeeded, with a passing rush which was finished off by Grenside, three-quarter, in the corner. Irvine landed a fine . goal. Bay 8-8. Play fiucted for a time Bay doing little more attacking than hitherto. During a Southland attack Kilby smartly potted a goal from a handy position. Southland 12 —S. There was no change to half time. It was quite a different story in the second spell when the sun and wind handicapped the challengers. Kivell did not come on again and Yates appeared as full hack. Bay forwards put up a great performance and Southland was seldom permitted to become very dangerous. Mill, Paewai arid Blake } were associated in a movement, which I let the latter over. The last-named sprinted twenty-live, yards or more in wing-three-quarter style and touched down under the posts. Irvine’s kick hit the posts. Bay 31 —12. Time sounded immediately. Mr. W. J. Meredith (Auckland). was referee. Moascar Cup Engagement. As a curtain-raiser, Te Aute College retained the Moascar Cup against a plucky team of much lighter boys from Whangarei High School. The visitors had tin- advantage of the elements in the first half and had a. lead, 8 to 6 at half tilde. Heavy ram felt during the closing stages. Wellington defeated ' Canterbury b points to ti after a game which was closely contested and in wliicii tlie visitors had the worse of the luckln the first spell Canterbury playing with the wind scored ail their points. Porter did not force. After a Canterbury attack, Ford (Canterbury) secured and darted over. The kick missed. Off-side play on the part of Wellington gave a free kick to Canterbury and Nixon goaled. For the remainder of the spell the. visitors had the better of the play. Tn the second spell, Canterbury were without the services of Dailey. Wellington ’made some determined dashes’ but the visitors; tackling was most effective. Towards the middle of the spell Cove sent the ball to Nicholls who dummied. When tackled he passed to Malfroy who scored near the corner; Nieholls’s kick just missed. Porter played brilliantly in the second spell. After being held up on the. line he managed to gel across soon after. With a great kick, Alark Nieholls goaled and won the match. The junior rep. match. Wellington v. Canterbury, was won by the local team. 16 to 5.
