COMBINE PLEASURE WITH BUSINESS. MA NAWATU-HOROWHEN A CONSUMMATE UNION. (Palmerston Times.) On Saturday night at Fri'emun’s tearooms the members of the executives of the Manawatu and Horowhenua Rugby Unions held the first meeting of the amalgamated 1 r nion and to elect officers as under:—Patron: Mr H. F. Gibbons (Manawatu): president: Mr A. Hannay (Manavvatu); vice-presidents: Messrs. T. Collins (Manawatu) and J. W. Proctor (Horowhenua); hon. treasurer: Mr J. R. Hardie (Manawatu): hon. secretary: Mr. J. B. Proud (Manawatu) ; committee: Messrs. W. Carrutliers, H. Crawford and K. W. F.glinton (Manawatu). S. Austin. L. S. Carmichael, J. W. Rimmer and F. Robinson (Horowhenua); hon. auditors: Messrs. A. S. Faire and C. W. White (Manawatu). The whole of the fifteen members of the Horowhenut executive were present., but there were four Manawatu absentees. Mr A. Hannay was voted to the chair, his election to president being heartily applauded. The meeting adopted the by-laws of the two district unions and two recommendations were made to the executive committee: (1) That the Union consider the question of dividing the competitions into divisions: and (2) that the boundary between the district unions be from Longburn to the Manawatu River, to Soren ■
son's corner, thence io the sea. In speaking to the matter of divisions Mr J. W. Rimmer advocated following the Soccer system where the two bottom first division teams lost their places for the next season to the two top-second division teams. (This has been adopted by the Wellington Cricket Association.
Executive Meets. A short meeting of the newly-elect - ed committee w T as then held. It was decided to assemble the Manawatu-Horowhenua team to play Southland, at Palmerston‘North, on Tuesday night, its members to meet at gymnasium at 7.30. Messrs. W. Carruthers and T. Wriglcy Avere. appointed joint managers. The 'Southland team arrives by the NapierWelling’ton express this afternoon. Charges for the first representative fixture Avere made as foiloAA’: Gate: men 1/6. ladies 1/-; children free; stand, 6d for everybody. The next meeting will be held o: Palmerston North on the night of the New South Wales v. Wcllington-Horo-whonua - M an a Ava t u match. Celebrating the Occasion. Mr and Mrs Len. Freeman then entertained the delegates at supper the room and lable being prettily decorated in the colours of the union At the head of the table Avas a tloAvered arch from Avhicli was suspended a bon mot “Success, to the' ManaAvatu - HoroAvhenua Union.’ Many and varied were the toasts proposed, honoured and responded to all the remarks being brief, to the point and in keeping with the occasion In response to the toast of “The Native Race,” Mr Honi McMillan in a . speech of dignified eloquence, stressed the bon camaraderie that existed betAveen the members of the native and European races. At the conclusion of his remarks he presented Mr Hannay Avith a pipe, the bowl of Avhich Avas carved with three heads emblematic of his duty as president to look at things from more than any one angle; Avith three pairs of eyes as it were. The Secretary’s duty being of a one-eyed nature (great laughter) to look Jfter finance chiefly. Mr McMillan also handed a pipe to Mr J. B. Proud; darving qonsisting only of one head.
Both recipients acknowledged the. unexpected gifts which they said they Avould treasure as priceless. The final toast, “Our Host and Hostess,’’ (Mrs Len. Freeman) was drunk Avifhout heel-taps, “God Save, the King,” terminating a gathering marked by the best of good fellowship. On all sides the- HoroAvhenuas were. shoAvmred with congratulations on their victory on the field.
