SHANNON BOWLING CLUB.
SPECIAL MEETING. A special meeting of members ol the Shannon Bowling Club was held in the Council Chambers on Wednesday evening, mainly to discuss the report of the committee set up to go into the question of lighting the local green by electricity. There was a good attendance of members over whom tiie president (Mr J. T. Bovis) presided. LIGHTING THE GREEN. The committee set up to consider the advisability of lighting the green and pavilion by electricity reported as follows: —After" going thoroughly into the pros and cons ol the question we are unanimousiy of opinion that the installation will be of material Lem nt to the Club by increasing the membership and assisting the finances. Several residents who have not hitherto been members have announced their intention of joining should evening play be available. The cost oi installing (estimated by Mr Jack not to exceed £3O) does not seem to be insurmountable. Wc consider there are two or three alternative ways of raising the necessary funds: (1) By voluntary contributions pi members; (2) by means of a function at the green in which the neighbouring clubs be asked to participate; (3) ’ a combination of the above two proposals. Lighting expenses can easily be met by making a small charge per game for night play. RECOMMENDATIONS.
:1} That the lighting be installed in time for the coining season; (2) That the plan as outlined by Mr Jack be adopted, viz., one light in pavilion and four -JOO-wa.lt lights over green. Lamps over green t,o be placed in tlie angles'of the green 30ft from either ditch. Poles carrying lights tobe of sufficient height to diffuse light with a minimum, of shadow. Height suggested by Mr Jack 20 to 25 feet. (3) All lamps to he on separat" switches to permit of play on either direction, also, when two lights only are required. (4) Work lo be carried out by the Power Board under Mr Jack’s super vision. In conclusion we would point out that the extra wear on the green caused by night play would be no ’ detriment’ to the green. It .must be remembered that portion-of our green does not get sufficient use to keep it hi goou piaying condition. The extra use is calculated to give a better paying surface. xn- Banning, m moving the adoption of-the'report, said he felt that o-y lighting the green the membership ■** wouiu be increased if members were aue to play' of an evening. Finance . lor the scheme could be raised by a ' function on tire green and if there should be a deficiency, no doubt some of the members would be prepared to put their hands in their pockets. There would be the chance to get shin i tourneys off - of a night anu lie was oJ opinion they would get good support from other clubs in these evening games.' it was essential to have the tights installed at once. He pointed out that arrangements couiu ue made to- have the light cut off at the end of the season. He suggested tiiat tiie charge- for the use icif the h-iit should be 6u to members, and Is tor non-members and lie thought that by the latter becoming interesitu some woulu probably become members of the ejud and thus- add io the finances of me Glub which would enable them to nave a goou gieen. t Ml spencer, iu seconding the adoption ot tne report, said a members wanted to make a name in tiie bowling world they must have proper fa- • CiUiics lor __ xir Brann asneu if me charge oils was lor outside players or tor meat people. - Mr uunning said it referred to tiie Imier. ms idea was .that it would b ue mem an opportunity to play me aiue and that il interested _ they wouid probably become members. Betavmg to a quest-noil, lie said the switch would be kept, under luck and aev aiia members would take chaige in tuiii. He said if the report was adopted he fell they would be able to avoid increasing the annual subscription. He- mought there would re sufficient lees received IQ cover the rest of the lighting. • The report was adopted, Mi Gunning moving and Mr Spencer seconded, “That the electric light be installed on the green as set out, m the report and that the Lighting Committee be instructed to carry out the necessary details.'-Carried. Mr Murray recommended that tne work be pushed on with not later than September. Mr Spencer said the lights 'would be ready for the opening day. The general committee in conjunction with the lighting committee were appointed to go into details oi c rules governing the lighting. SUBSCRIPTION FEES. Mr Gunning, who at the annual meeting gave notice of motion to increase the subscriptions, said that it the lighting scheme had not been adopted this would have been very necessary as the. Club’s income was not sufficient to meet their liabilities, unless they increased their, membership He asked if the Croquet Club desired the bowlers to keep the croquet green in order or were the ladip S going to make their-i own arrangements. He said it was a lot of work for a man to keep it in order anc would probably cost £2O for the season. It was a matter they would have to go into. He was of opinion now that by adopting night play there would be extra revenue from new members -and lighting foes which would enable them to keep at the old subscription of £2 10s. He said he had drawn up his scheme to increase the subscription in the event ol tin. lighting being turned clown as it was impossible to carry, on with the present income. Mr Murray emphasised the fact t-nat if they wanted a good green they must be prepared to pay for it and it
