A RAILWAY GUARD’S MANSION.

Few mansions have had such adventures as the Red Hall at Bourne, Lincolnshire, the ancient home of '.he Digby’s, where Sir Everard Digby, one of the chief conspirators in Gunpowder Plot ,was born in 1578. He was famous for his great stature ind bodily strength, but he lost his head for his share in the plot. . Now the old hall is the home of a North-eastern guard, who has just retired after 41 years’ service, during which he made 107,000 journeys on the Bourne branch line. This branch line proved the ruin of the ancient house, for it was driven right through the grounds to avoid going through a hill. The company Had to buy the old place, but promised the local antiquarian society that it would never pull it. down. First it made into the railway station and a residence for the stationmaster, and now that a new railway station has been built some distance away, the retired guard has taken up his abode in the ancient home of the Digby’s.
