WHEAT COMPENSATION.
STATE MAY BE SUED,
New South Wales Cabinet decided that if the wheat-growers wished to sue the State Government for the £541,000 compensation alleged to be due to them out of the 1916-17 Wheat Pool, the way would b e open for them to do so.
The amount in dispute not only precipitated a crisis in State politics last year, but remained a thorn in the side of the hito Government, to the end. It was a question originally whether the £541,000 should have been paid to the New South Wales growers instead of to the Australian Wheat Board, to cover general debt, and the Progressive Party fought hard on behalf of the former.
Litigation was proposed, but the Fuller Administration quashed it by pleading the Statute of Limitations. The Premier (Mr. Lang) announced that it was not the intention of the present Government to plead the Statute of Limitations, and consequently the growers concerned in the controversy would have a full opportunity of proving their claim in court, if they decided to take proceedings.
