ARBOR DAY.

+ • AT SHANNON SCHOOL. Arbor Day was celebrated - at the shannon School on Wednesday by tree planting and a sports meeting ana a most enjoyable outing was spent by the children and their parents, notwithstanding that a cold wmu wa's blowing nearly all day. The children assembled at the school at 10 a.m. and alter they had been addressed by Mr Phillips, a member of the School Committee, on the object of Arbor Day, the boys of the 4th, sth and 6th standards made a start with the tree planting, the remainder of the children being dismissed with instructions to keep away from the planters. The planting was carried out under the supervision of their masters, Messrs White and M6rgan, and about 300 assorted trees were

planted by lunch time. All the children were then assembled and provided with an excellent luncheon, the catering being' in the hands of Mr M. J'ippler.

After luiich a sports, meeting was held, which created a lot of interest among the children and some keen contests eventuated. During the day the members of the committee and the teachers worked hard to make the day an enjoyable one and they are to be congratulated on their success. We feel sure that the children in the fu-. hire will look forward to Arbor Day. During the afternoon a tea and refreshment stall was conducted by the lady teachers, which was well patronised, and the school fund will benefit thereby. Lollies, apples, and peanuts were also handed out to the children during the afternoon. The following are the results-of the sports:— Primer (boys); Dennis 1, Millar 2, G.
