EX-RAILWAY MANAGER HITS OUT.
AND GETS CHEERED TO THE ECHO. WELLINGTON, Last Night. On Saturday night the New Zealand Railways Officers' Institute made a presentation to Mr R. W. McVilly. late General Manager of the New Zealand Railways. Mr J. Robertson (president) said Mr McVilly had always been fair and impartial in all his dealings with the Institute. In reply, Mr McVilly referred to the railways to-day which comprised 7,000 miles, costing £40,000,000. Referring to his critics he said: "1 do not mind being criticised for things I have been able to do but have not done, but when one is kick* ed, lied about and slandered for what one has not been able to do, by those who have prevented him, that is when it hurts. I have always had the courage to do the right thing when permitted, and have tried to meet the staff fairly and squarely, n.nd hold the the scales with equal poise. I regret to say that I have on occasions had to refuse requests which I have not been permitetd to grant." Mr McVilly was cheered to the echo and later on with Mr Chas. Batten, for 21 years president of the Wellington branch, was made a life member.
