At tlie Council meeting on Tuesday night Mr J. Swindlahurst was appointed borough ranger.

An apology for absence was: received from Cr. Spencer at Tuesday night’s Council meeting owing to he having to go to Wellington.

Mr J. M. Jenkins, of Paekakariki, has succeeded Mr Dav.ey who has been transferred to Hamilton, as letter carrier.

Mrs C. M. Cronquest and her Jitllc son are visiting Paeroa and are the guests'of Dr. and Mrs Little, of that town.

The junior committee of Ven. Bede’s will hold a dance in tire Parish Hall on Tuesday evening. There will be a number of novelty dances and the music will be supplied by Mrs Butler and those who attend arc assured a pleasant evening.

Miss Shanley, who has been on the local telephone exchange staff for some months past, left yesterday for Apiti to which’ place she has been transferred. She will be succeeded here by Mr F. E. Chapman, of Eketahuna.

The fortnightly euchre and dance lie Id under the auspices ,'of the Ladies’ Guild of Ven. Bede’s on Tuesday night, was again a huge success, the hall being crowded out when dancing was ready to start. The euchre prizes were won by. Mrs Chas. Easton and Mrs Hensmann and Messrs G. Caldwell and G. Gunning.

The rainfall in Shannon for the month ending May 31st as supplied per favour of Mr Sinclair, of Vance street, was as follows: —Rain fell on U days with a total of 7.56 inches, the heaviest fall being on the 4th and :12nd, when 1.31) and 1.69 inches fell. For the corresponding period last year there was a total of 2.61 inches for 13 days, the heaviest being .62 inches on the Ist.

At a meeting of the Library Committee held on. Wednesday evening itwas debided to place an order for SO to 100 new books for the Library. These will,replace those books which are damaged, etc., and any that are duplicated. The damaged hooks are to be lbhvarded to the men ait the Mangahao camp, while arrangements are being made for the remainder to be disposed of by tlie ladies who intend conducting a street stall this month to raise funds for a piano for tlie school.

On King’s Birthday a seven-a-side football match took place at Tokomam, between teams . from the Makerua and Tokonmru schoolboys, the. Makeruia boys winning by 8 points to 6 after a very evenly contested game. After the' match both teams were right royally treated to afternoon tea. at the Tokomaru school by the headmaster, Mr Hickson, and Mrs Hickson, and the senior girls. Before departing Mr Taylor, headmaster of the Makerua School, expressed the pleasure it gave the Makerua team to make the visit and he trusted that further such games would result.

Cr. Curran again drew the Council’s attention at its last meeting to the fact that the waste water from the town was unable to get away owing to the drains on the Foxton road being blocked. It was stated the Horowhenua County Council's attention had been drawn to the state of the drains, but no reply had .been received from them on the matter. The Mayor pointed out that the Main Highway Board now had control of this road and it was resolved to write to the Board asking that the drains on both sides of the Foxton road he cleaned out.

Tile Otaki Mail says; Mr W. H. Field, M.P., lias been endeavouring lo get an early morning train to run from Otaki to Wellington, leaving at about 6.45 or 7 a.m., so as enable passengers to get into tiie city at about y a.m. Mr Field also asks that a train leave Wellington at about i p.ni., and arrive ;n Oiaki at 3.30. The Minister has agreed to give the trains a trial next summer, and if a payable proposition they will be continued daily. Mr Field is also endeavouring to get a reduction in fares.

A meeting was held at the Levin School yesterday of the Horowlienua District Dental Association. The Rev. J. D. McArthur presided and there were also present Messrs Roe, Adams, Foss ‘and Ker,slake (Levin), Clifford (Manakau) and Rodston (Poroutawhao). Mr Clifford reported havingenrolled thirteen new children at the householders’ meeting, and Mr Rolston handed in the names of ten new scholars. The Levin list totalled 235. The meeting discussed the matter of interesting the neighbouring towns, and it was decided that delegates wait on the School Gonmiittees in Otaki, Shannon and Foxton and explain the scheme. Messrs Clifford, Adams, and Foss undertook to visit Otaki, Mtessrs Adams and Roe, Foxton; and Messrs McArthur and Kerslake, Shannon. The meeting adjourned till Monday, .lone 15, at 2.30 p.m.
