PUNT OUT OF COMMISSION.
ANOTHER HOLD-UP AT SHANNON BRIDGE. A furrier hold up of the punt on the, iVi inawatu river occurred four or five oays ago owing to the large rope use,i for hauling the punt breaking. Mr Furkert, Chief Engineer of the Purjb.e Works Department, made an inspection on Wednesday and as a result a new rope has been ordered and is due to-day. Owing to the flooded state of the river and the. cutting having silted up, it will probably ne another three or four days before the punt will be working. A further scour has taken place at tiie approach to the bridge, the flood waters which swirl in at this point shaving carried the land away right up to the telegraph post alongside. It is anticipated that the next fresh that comes down will make the cage which is used to cross the river when tiie punt is out of commission", inaccessible. As a result of Mr Furkert’s visit it is understood an engine and pump are to be procured,' the latter to be used for pumping out' the cuttings when silted. The pump will) be driven by the engine, the latter will also be used fos. hauling the punt.
