OIL CARRIER ASHORE.
VT THE WANGANUI RIVER MOUTH TUG GOES TO HER AID. WANGANUI, May 25. The steamer 'Gyrene, laden with benzine, grounded .yesterday onOrning on a sand shoal, probably farmed by the flood in the river and the heavy seas of the past few days. She sbiited during the night and is now grounded about 100 yards north of the north mole.
As the vessel is reported to be leaking in all her holds, the tug Terawhiti was engaged and should be here this afternoon, it is anticipated that the work of lightering, which will lie carried out before, the tug’s/ arrival, should -proceed with little difficulty in view of the fact that at an early hour this morning, the sea ha,'d moderated appreciably, while the wind showed corresponding recovery. At the time of entering the roadstead the Gyrene was. drawing 17 feet. She is 2138 in tonnage and is the property of the. Anglo-Saxon (Petroleum Go. The vessel is in charge of Gapt. Patterson and carries between 40 and 50 men, of which About 15 are Europeans, the remainder being Chinese. The New Zealand Express Go. are agents for the Gyrene, which has u cargo of motor spirit and kerosene for southern ports, including 8000 cases to be discharged in Wanganui. WELLINGTON, May 25. The tug Terawhiti left Wellington at 7 this morning for Wanganui to assist the oil carrier Gyrene, which is ashore, at the river entrance.
