Levin, at Shannon (HSands). One of the biggest opium hauls in the history of Australia was made m Sydney recently, /resulting in 1537 tins, valued at £15,000, being confiscated byi 'customs Officers. The opium was found aboard the steamer Arafura. A» party of about ten Customs men, who were instructed to search the Arafura for alien stowaways and contraband, visited the vessel shortly after she arrived. For hours the party made a careful search overhauling every crevice and locker where it would be possible to secrete dutiable goods. It was noticed as they aproached the forepart of the Arafura, members of the Chinese crew began to take an interest in the operations. Underneath the fo'c'sle head are big lockers, where the anchor chains are stowed, and it was decided to let down the anchors, so. that -a more thorough search could be made. When the chains were, run out the searchers came upon the cache—nun- . dreds of tins of opium, in neat, easily portable parcels. The value of i the opium surprised the searchers themselves.
