For hours the party made a careful search overhauling every crevice and locker where it would be possible to secrete dutiable goods. It was noticed as they aproached the forepart of the Arafura, members of the Chinese crew began to take an interest in the operations. Underneath the fo'c'sle head are big lockers, where the anchor chains are stowed, and it was decided to let down the anchors, so. that -a more thorough search could be made.
