MAYOR WRITES TO MINISTER.

The Mayor of Shannon lias written tu the Minister of Public Works regarding the matter of the bridge over the Manawatu river. In iiis letter the Mayor has placed before the 'Minister the , sell-reliant policy always adopted by the people of Shannon. He states: About three years ago the Shannon borough was prepared to: voluntarily come in us a contributor to the cost of strengthening the bridge. Shannon has ever been a people helping themselves instead Of looking to the Government, and during the influenza epidemic wo cared for our own sick. We paid all our own expenses and came out with less loss of life than any other place, although we lia,d no doctor resident in the place and only one trained nurse whose services we gave to the Maoris. Then for the roads during (lie. progress of the Mangahau scheme w'e only received about 0600. Tins sum did not nearly cover the keeping of the roads over which were hauled the, thousands of tons tu Manguliuo. Shannon did not complain—we were only too glad to think we were doing someth img for 'such a great work. Then there was the banking of the Mangaore stream. The borough con- { tributed £SO. Tite Government required part of a street for a railway yard and no resident set up any claim and the council seconded the Government and advised the people that the yard was required. Tile Mayor adds that lie has always endeavoured to inspire the people of Shannon with a high idea of duty to their town and country and the Empire. Is it then a fair deal to leave the town'of Shannon cut off for such a length of time without anything definite being done? “Tf the people of Shannon were agitators asking for all manner of things with over 100 imaginary grievances, calling public meot-

mgs. passing hot. air .resolutions, etc., I daresay the bridge would havm assumed some shape by this time,” he says. Tiie Mayor asks the Minister to use his power and influence in the matter and all hope to see the bridge building commenced at an early date.
