HEAVY POLLING.
Keen interest was evinced in the municipal election at Shannon, and irqm the commencement evidence was not lacking- that the noil was going to be n heavy, one. All the' morning there was a steady stream of voters which was considerably increased in wie afternoon and evening. The Re turning Officer and his assistants were kept busy and when the poll closed at 7 p.m. m ejectors had recorded then votes, this number 'being a record for a municipal election in Shannon Interest all day was mainly centred in the result, of the Mayoral election ana u had heen generally anticipated that it would be an even contest and" as a result a large crowd gathered outside the Council Chambers awaiting the result. The result was made . known at 7.20 when it was found that the retiring Mayor (Mr Murdoch) had secured a big majority over his opponent, Mr Hyde. . The results were:.— A. E, HYDE 166 W.MURDOCH...... 319 Informal 10 ELECTION OF COUNCIL. There were 15 councillors nominated for the eight seats and it was not until abopt 9.30 p.m. that the result'was made known. Only two members of the old council, Messrs Butt and Curran, sought re-election and these two candidates topped the poll. The votes were very evenly divided among the other candidates. Tlie Labour Party were successful in securing Mr Dqwnes a seat they having also put forward Messrs Christian and McLaggan, wlio both polled well.. Last election Mr Downes filled ninth position out of 17 candidates. The new councillors are Messrs Roberts, Thwaites, Downes, Hook, Richardson and Watkins. Following are the results:—

HANSMANN ...... 80 Informal... ... 16 The Returning Officer announced that a recount of votes recorded by Messrs Wat-kins and Spencer would take place qn Thursday. Alter the result had been made known several of, the candidates returned thanks to those who -had supported them. Mr Murdoch was loudly applauded when he returned, thanks 'to those who had supported and assisted him. He 'said he had been subjected to bitter and urijust criticism but had come out of it all triumphantly. He'then tailed for three cheers for his chairman (Mr Taylor), which were hearted-, lv given. "Mr Hyde then thanked his supporters and all those w)m worked on his behalf. Although defeated he said he felt he had accomplished something of benefit to Shannon, because of causing so much interest in .municipal affairs and he looked forward in tne coming year to' some real progress being made in the Borough. He sau. he and the Mayor had always been firm friends and no douht would continue to be so. He hoped the Mayo. would s>ush forward Avith progressive works in the coming two years. Hi? then called for three cheers for uie successful candidate, which were given at the conclusion of which Mr Hyde was cheered.
