Mr Engel was heard, to great auvantage in jsonuuervs “Ave Maria,’’““The Rosary” and Gipsy Airs anu uipsy Dances, and had to respond each time he played. He is a lover pi his fiddle, winch as woi-tn £4OO, and they never part. He cannot remember when he started to play the violin being so young, fils tamer teaching him on a little baby fiddle when he could scarcely hold, the. in-' strument. Mr Engel is now conductor of one of the largest orchestras m the North Island and has a great number of pupils. He plays for some of the leading firms, in Auckland. He thoroughly enjoyed ihis visit to Sfiannon and was interested to know that , so" many played the violin in the town; saying that he felt he Was playing to an appreciative and tmusicaliy-edA-cated audience. He was greatly help-, , ed with tiie sympathetic playing of ms accompaniste, Miss Thelma Shaw, F.T.C.L., L.L.C.M., whose brilliant playing also charmed the audience. Miss snaw played -several pianoforte solos from the great masters, and had to appear again and again. It ts hoped that these two artists, wall be heard again in Shannon. The Rev. Stewart proposed a very hearty vote oi thanks to Miss Shaw and Mr Engel, which was carried with muscal honours. Mr Howard Andrew supported the motion and included thanks to the Shaw family, who.se guest Mr Encrei was. Mr Shaw suitably replied and said it gave them the greatest of pleasure to assist ?. the Shannon Choral Society. The ladies provided a very nice supper. i The members of the Choral Society , are reminded of the practice next week and a full muster is asked forThe business, is a practice for Day and the choir are asked to bring their anthems. The other part of tne practice will be devoted to the oratorio “Esther,” which it is hoped will be given at an early date.
