DEHORNING CATTLE.

The correct'time to undertake the operations of dehorning the dairy animals is at the conclusion of their milking periods, and when pregnancy is not too far advanced. Cold weather conditions are preferable, and if the animals are young and the horn fairly green, a sharp pair. of sterilised shears should be used. In old cattle a hacksaw would be required, and especially so when the horns have a broad base. Care should be taken to have the animals securely fastened in the crush pen during the operation. The horns should not be removed closer to the head than two inches in grown cattle, otherwise a large hole in the root of the; horn is left exposed. The wounds should be well tarred to keep away blowflies, and stop excessive bleeding. The horn stump quickly heals and the cows come in the following season as good as ever.
