A RATION FOR PIGS.
THAT ' HAS BEEN TRIED OUI SUCCESSFULLY IN AUSTRALIA. The editor of our contemporary "The Live Stock Bulletin" recom« mends the following ration for pigs He says:—Several correspondent* have asked recently for the compiplalion of an economical ration for pigs. There is one ration, suited to the conditions pf most of bur dairy-farm- 1 ers, which stands out above all others.! It is composed of maize and skimf| milk. There is no; other ration so eco- j nomical and none so easily provided. Skim milk is rich in protein, and maize is rich in starch. The proportions of skim milk and grain to be fed will depend on the age of the pigs. Just after weaning, 4 to 6 lbs. of skim milk to each pound of maize wall be sufficient to make maximum gains when pigs are in confined quarters. As they grow older the proportion of skim milk needed to balance the maize, will decrease. Pigs weighing 50 to 100 lbs. require 2 to 3 lbs. of skim milk to 1 lb. of maize. Pigs weighing 100 to 130 lb. require 2 lb. of skim milk to 1 lb. of maize. Pigs fed with maize on good pasture need only one-half as much skim for each pound of maize, and if their' . feeds be available there is, no need ' A buy ■ anything else. If Bkim milk•■-" M not a.vailable there will be a buy wheat bran, linseed meal, or pr W ard to balance the maize properly, ( ■ the great majority of our pig-raisy*. M have an abundance of skim milkman ™ all the men inquiring have it on hand.*' We cannot suggest a better ration.
