SELLING CATTLE BY WEIGHT.
At a recent, meeting of the North Canterbury Farmers’ Union a discussion took place on the advisability of selling fat cattle and pigs by weight at the Addington saleyards. The question came up as a result of the Oxfoi'd branch forwarding the following remits: (1) That the executive be urged to move in the direction ot securing facilities at Addington saleyards for weighing fat cattle and fat pigs. (2) That the executive urge the Christchurch City Council to erect cool storage at the abattoirs. ‘Mr. Parish, of Oxford, speaking to the first portion of the remit, said that farmers were not getting fair treatment in respect of the sale of their stock. Butchers had had a good time, but the published quotations of prices for fat stock were not always reliable It was considered that fat cattle should be sold on the scales, and, the necessity for a special day for the sale of fat stock being arranged for was a growing, one. The time was coming when the farmer should know what price per pound he was getting for his stock. He moved the adoption of the remits.
The ohairman said he thought both matters should be supported, and he seconded the adoption of the remits Cattle should be sold in a ring, tho weight being announced of each beast as it. entered the ring. Mr. Carpenter said that in other parts cattle and pigs were sold on live weight. The remits were adopted.
