SACRED CONCERT.
On Sunday evening a sacred concert was given in the Maonland Theatre for tne purpose of augmenting me funds of me Palmerston North public Hospital. The. concert, wlncn was organised at the request of me Mayu* (Mr NY. Murdoch) was an unqutamea success both from a musical and financial viewpoint. Those responsible for its organisation were Mrs J. T. Bov is, Mr Howard Andrew and the Revs. Stewart and FarneLL, and Mrs Clifford Jones. The enthusiastic audience mat filled me house to. its utmost capacity helped in no small way to inspire mose wno contributed to the programme. 'Rue choir, (under the leauership of Mr Howard Andrew, rendered three very beautiful anthems and gave every promise oi even better work in the future, while‘all the soloists wore in splendid voiice. Unfortunately the instrumental items were at a big disadvantage through having to be so far. away from the piano, but as the stage space is very limited it was the best that could be done. During the evening His Worship the Mayor (Mr Murdoch) made an earnest appeal to the audience for funds on behalf of the Palmerston Norm Hospital and paid a. high tribute to the staff of the hospital for the courtesy they had always shown him botn as a member of the. Board and as Mayor of Shannon. He mentioned that several members of the staff from the hospital were present in the theatre and asked the audience to carry by acclamation a hearty vote-of appreciation of the great work they were carrying on. „ , A collection in the. hall was then taken up and the' sum of £24 16s 4d was collected, while later in the evening this amount was increased by donations of £5 from Mr Jhing Lee, £4 5s from .Mrs Rawlinson and 10s from Mr Siddons'afid these amounts, added to the sum of £ls 10s as a -result of street collections on Saturday afternoon, a total of £SO 10s 4d was collected. This amount far surpassed the expectations of the. promoters of the effort and -they are grateful to the imDlie for their splendid response. The Mayor publicly thamkefd the organising committee, the secretary, Mrs BQvis, the choir conductor, Mr Howard Andrew, the pianist Mrs Clifford J-ones, and all those who took part lor the time and energy they had put in preparing for the conceit, the trustees of the Anglican Church for the. free use of the Parish Hall for practices, Messrs Wilkinson 'and Hyde far the free use of the theatre, Mr L. Howard Andrew mentioned that the choir did not intend to disband but were already in the midst of practising a cantata and he hoped that very soon they would be appearing before the public again. After the. performance the hospital staff and tbe Palmerston vocalists were entertained to supper, at the rear of the theatre before returning home. The programme was as follows: Hymn, “All People that on earth do dwell,” choir, orchestra, and audience; overture, orchestra; anthem, “What are these?” (Stainer), choir; instrumental quartette, (harp) Miss Mona Neale, (cello) Miss Dolce Spencer, (violin) Miss Eva Quarrie, (piano) Miss RUa Byers; song, “How Lovely are Thy Dwellings (Liddell), Miss Aim, A.T.C.L., A.L.C.M.; duet, “Hold Thou My Hand,” Mr and Mrs Bishop; song, “Angels Ever Bright and Fair” (Handel), Mrs J. Bovis; monologue, “The -Sea is His” (Dale), Mr Howard Andrew; song, “La Seranata” (Braga), Miss Upton; duet, “Nocturne” (Denza), Mrs Cronquest and Dr. Mackereth; solo, “Onaway, Awake Beloved,” Mr Howard Hunter; offertory selection, orchestra; violin selection, “In the Cloister” (Torrance), Miss W. Pickles; vocal solo, Miss Butler; anthem, “The Angelus” (Maritana), choir; song, “Deep in My Heart” (Stephenson), Mrs Riddler; quartette, “Th e Lord shall comiort Zion,” Mrs Bishop and I 'Mrs 80-vis, Mr Bishop and Mr Quarrie; pianoforte solo, Mrs Clifford-Jones; anthem, “The Radiant Mom” (Woodward), choir.
