CONVERSION OF MILKING MACHINES.
The grading standard having been raised recently, dairy farmers should seriously consider the question of converting their milking machines (says the “Dairyfarmer”). By this is meant the removal of all galvanised vacuum piping and the substitution of nickel-plated or drawn brass piping. The greater part of grading troubles is due to dirty or faulty vacuum systems,, and this applies particularly to machines which have been in use for several years. It is generally known that, during milking, where releasers are in use a milky vapour is ; always flying back into the vacuum pipes, and, in the case of up-to-date machines, this is easily prevented because all vacuum piping is of drawn brass or nickel. Where, however,, galvanised piping is used,' a'nd has been in use for a. few years, it is not an easy matter to clean them. Galvanised piping corrodes inside as well as being rough. In a good many cases no provision is made at corners to facilitate cleaning. Added to this, the longer this galvanised piping is in use the more it corrodes, making it very hard for the dairy farmer to produce a good grade cream.
