THE VALUE OF LIME.
Although lime is not classed among the essential plant foods, as are nitrogen, phosphoric acid and potash, it is certain that all crops require a certain proportion of lime for growth and healthy development. It cures sour land, and by so doing improves the herbage of grass' lands. It breaks down locked.up organic matter of the soil, rendering it available for plant nourishment. It liberates the dormant mineral substances, such as potash and phosphates, in the soil. It improves the physical condition of heavy soils. Finally, its presence in adequate quantities in the soil enables fertilisers sueli as superphosphate and sulphate of ammonia to act with a great, amount of benefit. These advantages of liming are no doubt known to most farmers, but it is well to have them * occasionally called to mind, lest the farmer may forget.
