SHANNON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The fortnightly meeting of the Borough Council was held m the Council chamber on Tuesday. Present: TUe Mayor and Cas Gunning, Beard, Murray, Butt and Hyde. WATER ON FARMS.

Joseph Liggins wrote agreeing to take the water on (his farm on* the Levin road and to. pay the charge for the water, also to abide by and carry out all conditions made in respect to the water supply. He also agreed to supply all material and labour at his own expense. The work is to be done under the supervision and control of toe Borough Engineer, it was resolved on the motion of toe Mayor that Ma- Liggins' farm be" connected up from toe Borough supply under the conditions, made, and a charge of 2/6 per acre 'Over toe whole farm 'be made per annum and any other person wishing %o come in on that road to pay Mr Liggins a fair proportion of the cost of conveying the water along the road.

A SANITARY MATTER A ratepayer wrote protesting about the unsuitable style of tins the Council was sending out as sanitary pans and suggested that pe Council obtain from the Health authorities a proper design or apply to toe Borough Engineer for advice. He suggested that proper sanitary pans ibe obtained as oU drums are too long and too narrow and for some, reason or other toe handles are always put on wrong. He stated that when toe Hiorowhenula County Council was in charge toe rate"had not cheap and) nasty outfits as we have had to put up with lately." ' • ■ - A letter on the same subject was received from another ratepayer. It was decided to write to both parties stating tjhat new cans are toeing installed and will be tarred and properly disinfected. WATER FOR THE SCHOOL.

From the Secretary of the Shannon School Committee asking toe Council to reconsider toe charge of £lO per annum for supplying waten toj the ! school as the Committee deem the proposed charge too high. The letter pointed out that in moist towns the' water is supplied free and in most others a substantial reduction is allowed as the parents are already rated for such service.—-It was decided to ask the School Committee to make application to toe Education Board for the latter to pay the annual water ru,te as it was the opinion of Or Murray, who was Chairman of toe School Committee for some years, that toe Board would pay the rate. STREET LIGHTING AGREEMENT From Secretary Horowhenua Electric Power Board 'pointing ,Qut the ne- i cessity of an agreement 'being signed m regard to street lighting, otherwise toe Board could not carry on with its numerous customers on business lines and stating that what toe Council is asked in regard to paying for toe agreement is only what is customary m such cases.—The May% moved that toe agreement be signed providinff alterations are made.

LIVING ROOMS BEHIND SHOP An application for a permit to make alterations to. rear of premises occupied by Mrs Vaughan, Plimmer Terrace, was received from toe owner of the premises. Such alterations were to be for thef purpose of providing living accommodation.—The permit was refused, it being toe opinion of the Council that people should not (be encouraged to live on the premises, in this block as there was not sufficient backyard space to conform with the Health regulations. GENERAL. The Town Clerk drew attention to the light at the.corner of Stouit and Vogel street being hidden by the trees on toe Domain and recommending that it be transferred to the opposite side of the street.—'Agreed to. The Town Clerk was instructed to purchase a spray and a gallon of disinfectant, which will be used for spraying the library 'books and for use for sanitary purposes. The Mayor stated it was most important that the library books be. kept disinfected. A complaint was received' tlhat two or three car owners, were making a practice of carrying passengers in the Borough without a license to do' so, which the complainant said was not fair to those who had taken out a license.—The Mayor suggested that toe sanitary contractor he offered the appointment of inspector of nuisances as at present there was no person appointed to see toat toe by-laws were not infringed..—The Mayor's suggestion was agreed to and the Town Clerk is to interview the contractor on toe matter.
