THE SHANNON PUNT.

"ANTIDELUVIAN AND RIDICULOUS," SAYS MAYOR OF FOXTON.. At last meeting of tlhe Foxton Borough council the Mayor (Mr Chrystall) reported on the conference oi local bodies held last week to discuss matters re the Shannon bridge. He said he was disappointed at the action oi the Manawatu County Council. A resolution had been carried at that conference recommending t)he erection of a new ibndge to cost between £IB,OOQ and £©,ooo, and that the told bridge site be done away with, and further, that the punt he used until the new bridge was erected. This would be anything up to three years, and such a means of crossing the river as a punt was antidel uvian and ridiculous. The Manawatui -Higiniways Board "would have subsidised the cost of repairing tiie old bridge £15,000) by paying onethird of. the cost, ibut m spite of this fact tiie proposition had been discarded Fox don would have to pay- its allocated snare in connection witn the ereeution of the new ibridge and. interest and sinking fund on tne old bridge, the matter was of vital importance to all concerned. Tne mutton carried at the conference was in direct defiance of settlers on both sides oi the river, who wanted tne old bridge repaired. ' it was decided nothing could be done and the matter was dropped.
