NURMI BREAKS SHRUBB’S RECORD

FOR FOUR THOUSAND YARDS. I (Received Thursday, 7 p.in.) NEW YORK, February 4. At Newark, New Jersey, Nurmi while running a 2$ mile race, broke Alfred Shrubb’s record for 4,000 yards. Nurmi’s time was lOmin. SSsecs. (Alfred Shrubb holds the record for 2 miles (9.9 3-5), 8 miles (14.17 3-5), 4 miles (19.23 2-6), 6 miles 24.33 2-5). He came out to New Zealand nearly 20 years ago with the American sprinter A. F. Duffy whom the late Brian Goodbehere—son of Mr E. Goodbehere, Feilding, beat in an invitation 100 yards at the Athletic Park Wellington while still a student at Wellington College).

PARKER AND GREHAN. AUSTRALIANS’ DEBUT AT WELLINGTON. WELLINGTON, Last Night. The Australian chamipon sprinters, Parker and Grehan, made their appearance in New Zealand to-night. Both ran in 100 yards. In the first heat Parker was third to E. Guy (4yds.) Time 10 seconds. In the second heat, Leadbeater (scr.) was first, Grehan and Paris (scr.) dead heat for second, Time lOsecs. Final: Paris I,.Leadbeater 2, Parker 3, Grehan 4. A blanket finish in lOsecs. A great race in the mile saw D. Priestly (scr) just beaten on the tape by A. W. Anderson (66yds.) in 4.29 4-5. (The advance guard of the Australian team of athletes reached Wellington by the Ulimaroa on Monday. It was composed of two brilliant sprinters, N. J. Grehan, and L. C. Parker, of Queensland, who are best remembered for their performances at the last Australasian championships. Despite their ages—Parker is twenty and Grehan two years his senior—both men arc Australasian champions, and are regarded as two of the finest sprinters in Australia to-day. Grehan holds the official Australian' record for the 220 yards. They were prominent over the 100 yards and 220 yards at the Queensland championships, Parker winning . both events. Grehan was second in the 100 and 220. Parker and Grehan are of medium height, but the former can give his brother sprinter a stone in weight. Parker is lOst. 61b. f and Grehan 9st. 31b.)
