ALL OVER SIXPENCE
THREE YEARS IN GAOL. For wounding his sister, Alfred Bevan, a horsekeeper, was sentenced to three years' penal servitude at the Old Bailey recently. . / . It was' explained that the injured woman kept house for her brother. One Saturday night accused returned home semi-intoxicated, and a dispute arose over the rent, half of which prisoner paid. His sister declared that the rent was sixpence short. As a matter of fact,' the sixpence was found later. Prisoner went upstairs, returned with a revolver, and fired three shots at his sister at so close a range that her skin was scorched. Miss Bevan sustained two wounds, in the face and one in the chest. Had any of the bullets that struck her face been slightly deflected, the wounds might have proved fatal. v . The Judge, in passing sentence, observed: “The us© of firearms in matters of this kind 4s a most serlout offence, and has got to have serious punishment. It is only by the mercy of Providence that you are not standing in the dock on a charge of murder."
