The District Engineer (Mr J. siannah) wrote that the Public Woras Department had decided to instal a pum below the wrecked bridge on me Shannon-Foxton road, and that as no suitable punt could be procured m Wellington, a contract for the buuuing of one in sections, which wouiu b.: assembled at Shannon, had been let at a cost of £550. The total cost of providing temporary traffic facilities would be approximately £750, which they suggested Should be divided as follows: Main Highways Board ........... £250 Horowhenua County £ISU Manawatu Ciounty .................. £2OO Shannon Borough Council ...... £IOO Foxton Borough £SO They wrote further that Highways Board had decided to abandon the idea of again using the existing bridge in. its present position, and suggested that a,U.the necessary information be obtained as soon as piossible so that the existing bridge might be ultimately moved .to No. 3 site, near the mouth of the Tokoma.ru stream.

The chairman (Cr. G. A, Monk) stated that the necessary action had been taken and the punt was now being assembled on the river'bank. The, allocation of the cost of. the punt seemed to be a reasonable one and could be safely endorsed by the Council. Cr. Whyte asked what would be the position of the road necessitated by the shifting of the Shannon Bridge to the No. 3 site. The chairman stated that the road would be. gazetted a Main Highway and the cost would be allocated between the local (bodies and the Board.
