'Bishop, secretary of the Shannon Cricket Ciuib, bringing under the notice iqif the Chamber the present state -of the Domain and asking that body .'to, try and do something to get. the place j?ut in such a condition that cricket, can be played there as soon as possible. The writer stated they all knew the money had been given by the pu/blic of Shannon to those who were foremost in the cause twelve months ago, hut to-day they found that there were not four of those people who were willing to attend a meeting, let alone, carry the "business through.—lt was decided hi at the chairman of the Domain executive (Mr Murdoch) be written to asking to call a meeting of the executive atonce to go into the question of improvements at the Domain and failing getting a full meeting , of l the executive that. a pu/blic meeting ha railed FORMING A FIRE BOARD. In reply to a'letter forwarded by the president re particulars for, form- ' ing a fire brigade and procuring fire appliance, etc., the Superintendent of the Wellington City Council’s fire department forwarded the following let-. ■ ter;—“Whilst I: would be pleased to - assist you, I have, to point out, that it would hq valueless my making any suggestions ’ for the purpose of purchasing equipment without first knowing Shannon’s, requirements. I would therefore suggest that you get into touch with Mr J. Watts, advisory superintendent, Newmarket, Auckland, who (Joes this work oil behalf of the United Fire Brigades’ Associav tion. He would visit .Shannon and supply you with all the necessary 5 data on the ; formation of a brigade and the equipment required, together with best channels for purchasing.” —lt was decided to forward the letter to the Borough Council and ask them to poJqperate. in Obtaining -the necessary particulars , for forming a fire brigade and the cost of fire saving appliances. SWIMMING BATHS.

Mr. Tippler asked if the Borough Council Intended moving in respect to erecting swimming baths in Shannon now that water would soon be available?

Mr Hyde said that the Council had informally discussed the matter and the’Engineer had informed them that the cost would be approximately £BOO and as a result the Council had not been favourably impressed. iMr Andrew said he hoped the Council would give the question further consideration, as there was no finer exercise and pastime for children than swimming 5 and .if the Council , could do anything to help get some sort of baths they should. Members pointed out that an endeavour should he made to get a swimming pool if the. cost of baths was. too great, as’ they also recognised the value of swimming. On the motion of Mr Andrew it was decided that a letter be sent to the Borough Council as/king them to do •Mull in their power to. get swimmihg batihs for Shannon and also stating that the- Chamber would do all they could to assist them. SHOPPING DAY.

Mr Hyde, referring to the bus service from Shannon to Palmerston North, which had been recently organised, pointed out that it was most detrimental to the business, people of Shannon as -a large number of peo-ple-outside the town, who were in the habit of making Shannon their shopping centre, were now taking advantage of the .bus service and transfer-' ring their shopping to Palmerston N. It was a serious position and business men would have to do something to counteract it. A local man, he understood, had purchased a motor bus and intended to run from the outside places to Shannon. He suggested that a Shopping Day be held regularly and tiiat each business, man should make a point off offering special inducements to bring the people, to the town, such to be well advertised. He contended that if something was not done there, was a likelihood °f the town losing a greet deal of trade.' (Members agreed t.tiat a move would have tq be made, and they were fav-, ouxalhly impressed with jMr Hyde’s 'suggestion for a shopping day. -•Mr Beard suggested that, if the meeting of retailers on Monday next was. well attended, Mr Hyde outline his scheme, at the meeting. Mr Hyde being agreeable, it ■‘was decided to adopt the suggestion.
