A baby was born to German parents on the H.M.S. Ormonde, just before the liner reached Fremantle recently, and the. Australian Treasury officials admit themselves baffled as to whether the mother is entitled to tli 3 baby bonus. • The Maternity Allowance Act of 1912 lays it down that £5 shall be paid to every woman who gives birth to a child, either in Australia or on board a ship proceeding from one port in the Commonwealth or a territory of the Commonwealth. No mention is made of births on ships which, though in Australian waters, have not yet reached an Australian port. •One official stated that the child would be a British subject, simply by reason of it having been born on a British ship. The father is a briquetting expert on his way to Yallourn.
