IMPROVING THE DOMAIN.

| ■-+ I CARNIVAL COMMITTEE EXECUTIVE | MEETS. A meeting of £he Executive of tffe Carnival Committee was held in theLibrary on Wednesday evening. Present: 'JLhQ (Mayor (Mr Murdoch), Messrs J. V. Burns, G. Hardie, E. Buitt, W. Quarrie, j. Crowther, R. I Bishop, G, Watkins, and J, T. Bovis, secretary. f .The Mayor, in opening the meeting, said that two. representatives of the Executive had ibeen • appointed to carry out the work of having the Domain ploughed, 'disced, {rolled and sown down. They had called tenders for the work but had received none and had done nothing fursier< He said the executive were the trustees for the money contributed by the public for carrying out improvements to the Domain and it"was their duty to get the work done because {hey had to keep faith with the public. As neither "• of the delegates who had been appointed to see this work carried out were present, the meeting (appointed Mr E. Biutt to- take charge, with instructions to have the work done straight away. The Mayor said he hoped that as soon as the ploughing, etc., was completed, something would be done to have the pavilion, repaired, which he said had ’been badly damaged by acts of vandalism. Mr Crowther recommended that the open drain at the top end of the Domain be cut deeper to take the soakage.

The Mayor pointed out the necessity for s ai ifrope!r enclosure as at present there is no means of preventing persons climbing through the wire fence, thereby avoiding the admission charge to sports, etc. Members contended this matter was outside their power as the money had been contributed to be spent on the ground.

Mr Bishop, representing the cricket Club, said he had asked to be allowed to attend the meeting to ascertain hojw the money was intended to be spent, as 'his Club wished to help the Executive in any way They could. -

The Mayor said no blame for not having gone on with the work should ■be cast on. the general body as instructions had been given to two of their representatives to have the ploughing, etd.j carried out ; which they had not done. He'said as soon as this work was done the Cricket Club could prepare their pitch! Mr Watkins, representing the Athletic Club, said if ploughing, ate., was to be started now it would mean that his cluib will not be able to. hold a meeting this season.

The Mayor said he thought a meeting- could be held about the end p f February.

It was decided that after the .ploughing jmd sowUng is finished, when .thq balance in hand for other work will be known, to call for suggestions from the public how to spend the balance of the money.

This concluded the business and it was decided tqi meet- again on Wednesday, November 26th.
