BOROUGH COUNCIL.
FORTNIGHTLY MEETING.
The fortnightly meeting of the above Council was held in the council Chambers on .Tuesday evening. Present—'The Mayor (Mr Murdocff) and Crs Gunning, Beard, Hyde Butt, and Murray. ' ’ CORRESPONDENCE.
From District Engineer New Zealand Railways in reply to letter from Council with reference to the placing of three water pipes under the railway line, stating that his assistant, Mr Beck, will be in Shannon on Wednesday afternoon and could see the Borough Engineer at the station alter 5 p.m.—Referred >to Town Clerk and Engineer to flea! with Application from Shannon Tennis Club for permit to erect pavilion on their courts in Vance Street.—Granted.
From the Commissioner of Crown Lands, Wellington, notifying that section- 289 in the town qf Shannon, has by Order-in-Councff published in Gazette of the 30th ultimo, been vested in the Shannon Borough Council in trust for municipal purposes.—TUe Mayor stated the section mentioned is situated in' Vance street.—-ft ‘was decided that Mr Morgan, who has been leasing it, be allowed to continue the use of the section at a small trentaft until the Council require it. ROADMAN’S REPORT.
The roadman (Mr Haley) report id as follows on work carried out by him during the past month:.—We Have carted 89 yards of met'd, ~6 of \\r.i<h was placed on the ■ I-oot’jatn-j m Stout Vance, .Stafford and Reliance Streets, Plimmer Terrace, Nathan Terrace, Main North Road and East Road. The forming of the footpath in Smut Street ha s been finished. The grass flias also been /cleared from the s‘de of the roadman’s cottage in Plimmer Terrace, while attention has also, been given to the rubbish tip on Levin road. ENGINEER’S REPORT. The Elngineei* (Mr Eciiwlards) reported as follows:—In respect to th% waterworks, since (my last report about 18 chains of 4-inch pipes and 7£ chains qf 6-inch pipes have been laid in Plimmer Terrace and Stout street respectively; the 4-inch pipes cost approximately 30s per chain for labour. The brass gauge screen has been puit into position in the influent chamber and the intake pipes connected up. The water is now supplied from the water galleries to th^ reservoir and the scheme is now working satisfactorily. The balance of the 4-inch Mannesman pipes have been ordered and as soon as the fittings of the 6-inch and 4-incli pipes have been completed the pressure Will be put op this portion Of the reticulation* BRYANT’S DRAIN. The Mayor. stated that Mr Burling, Mr Bryant’s manager, had called on him /and stated he was agreeable to do certain work towards keeping the drain clean. The Engineer pointed out (that during the flood he had noticed the culverts were not able to cope with the Water. He suggested widening the drain along the road. —lt was decided that the Engineer interview Mr Burling re. the work the latter intends doing. THE WATERWORKS. The Town Clerk reported that up to November Bth the sum of £9544 10s 3d had been paid out in connection with the waterworks and that a further sum of £520 was outstanding. Cr. Gunning said that in company with the Engineer he bad made an inspection of the headworks and found the intake was. working satisfactorily and the water appeared good. E( ver ythittg was also quite satisfactory at the reservoir. The scour Qn Mr Spencer’s property bad been opened and when turned' on. had thrown a spray of 40ft or 50ft across the paddock and when on fuff there was a good pressure. There was no question in his mind hut that they had got a good job and he did not think they would have any trouble Of anything carrying away. They had got workmanship, quality, and quantity and he thought they should congratulate themselves. Cr. Hyde; I have no doubt about tile supply, but what worries me is how long it will be before it is available. Can the work be speeded up in anyway? The Engineer: All the large pipes have not yet arrived from England but are expected 'any day, I am now putting in 2000 feet of pipes and I am trying to borrow some from the importers so that there will be no delay. It would - not be possible to speed up any more.
