CHILDREN'S PLAIN AND FANCY DRESS BALL.
A BRILLIANT. GATHERING. Notwithstanding title boisterous weather conditions that prevailed on Friday evening the children's plain •and fancy dress, toall held in (the iQruids' Hall proved an unqualified i success, there being an exceptionally j large number of children in fancy ] dress pnesenlt, -&, large number oi adults also attending. The ball which | had been organised 'by the school teachers with the. assistance of the school committee was for the purpose of raising funds for the school, \ and the result must have been very' gratifying to them," they having worked hard in preparing the children and making the,, necessary arrangements. The hall, which had been gaily decorated with flags of all nations by the Mangahaoj Committee in readiness for the (banquet on Monday, and ferns and greenery on the walls made a most striking background for the many coloured dresses of the young dancers, the whole presenting a moat picturesque scene, Every possible kind of character seemed to 'have, been thought of am many of the dresses were original as well as pretty to look at. Proceedings opened witih. the; Grand March which was led by Master Lionel Meiwood and M&s~Lola Charles while the tiniest of children took part
Dancing, both square and round was enjoyed by the.: children until after 10 p.m., the music being provided by Mrs Butler. After the little ones had been treated to a sumptuous sit'down supper under the supervision of Mrs Whibiey, assisted by a number of ladies, the adults took charge of the floor and dancing was carried on until after midnight. Curing the proceedings. a vote was. taken of those present/to decide the winners of the prize for the best dressed boy an girl, the awards going to Master John Burgess, "Letter Box," and Miss Mary Retter, "Victorian Lady." Special prizes were awarded «fe follow: Most comical, Master Kenny Thompson, "Golliwog"; prettiest dress, Miss ■Phyllis Patton, "Victorian Lady." At the conclusion of the children's portion of the ball the chairman of the School' Committer (Mr.Jl. L. Tippler) in an appropriate speech thanked the { teachers, and parents for the enjoyable evening provided for the children, the. latter giving three rousing cheers.
