TO STIMULATE PIG-BREEDING.

MASSIVE CUP. PRESENTED BY MR KEBBELL. Ail exceptionally handsome Cup for dompetition |at tile • forthcoming snow has been received.by the Horowlienua A. and P-. Association from Mr KebbeU. In presenting the Cup to tb.e. Association Ma: Kebbell wrote that be had decided to.' offer the trophy for tne puii-po.se of encouraging the breeding of pigs, in'the district, in view of th.e prooabiiity of an, enlargement of tile industry .through the exploitation of over-seas markets. .The Cup, wiiicli i_ of solid silver and of massive though chaste design, stands eight inches higjh, the cup proper, ( whicli' is finished with two wide wing handles, being three incnes deep and six inches across. An ebony base. Of four inches hi lieigi .' completes, a trophy of which' tne As r sociation has eyery reason to be proud and which should ensure keen .competition. The conditions attached to the Cup are that it shall he a perpetual challenge trophy to be presented for the ■most points' gained in the pig section of the snow; this section comprising eighteen classes, divided into three classes for crossbreds and-two classes for each of pork, and bacon, varieties. The winner will hold the Cup for the year and will also receive the Association's certificate.

The possibility of a* considerable extension of'the bacon industry has o_ late i>een receiving considerable attention. With a country largely devoted to dairying, to which industry pig-raising is a natural adjunct, there is. no''question hut thaty given tihe right impetus, a .very considerable enlargement oi; wjhat is recognised as one of the. most profitable 'branches qf farming would result, with consequent profit to the country as a whole. Mr Kehbell's action in (recognising in )a practical manner the desirability of this extension *s a very worthy one and one wh 1 * will without doubt bear fruit in the much-needed stimulation of tne industry.
