THE PIG INDUSTRY.

SHANNON FARMERS ADVOCATE CO-OPERATION.

The question Qf the future of the pig industry in the Dominion wa« brought lorwiard by Mr R. W» Taylor at the Shannon Farmers' Union meeting on Wednesday evening, lie said tnat to the dairy farmer the industry was most important, rankling next to ibutter-f)at v 4 wihicn had been well provided for, but the pig industry had been neglected. The trouble in regard to th.is branch of the business, is the same as. prevailed some time ago in the disposal of butterlat, and.that is that the farmers did not stick together in marketing their products. The trouble had been overcome in dairying and it 1 could be got over in the pig industry and farmers Would thus be-able to get all there was in the pigs. He advocated that a number qf pig producers, should join forces and run I their own works, they being bound by a binding contract for" a term to supply all their pigs irrespective of what' prices were heing offered "by other concerns. They would have to take a risk but if they placed the same confidence in it as they did in their factory he felt autre it would be a success. He recognised that they wquld- have to contend With opposition from established companies, who. no doubt wqubd cut. If such was the case, the farmer would then have to export and then the prices would be raised and the farmer could come on to the local market again. Mr Bowler, in supporting Mr Taylor, said that if the farmers co-op.er-ated with a strictly binding contract, in his qpinion, the scheme would prove a success. This was the- general opinion of the meeting.
