BOWLING SEASON OPENS.
A GOOD ATTENDANCE AT. SHANNON Although the weather was inclined ' to toe showery, the Shannon Bowling i Cluo were lortunate that the ram held off until late in the afternoon for ! their official opening'on Wednesday, and a most enjoya'ble afternoon's sport was indulged in. There was a record number Qf howlers from neiglinouring clubs, there being seven visiting rimes, viz., Levin. Otaki and Foxton two each, and Paimerston Norm one. ihe green was in splendid order considering all the rain 0.l xi e past few. days and the grounds #ener.aliy presented a very neat appearance, the hedges having trimmed, gates repaired and painted, and the pavilion had also received'attention, and together with the large number oi howierg and their friends present, the whole had a most pleasing efiect. in audition to. the howlers; there was also a large number of visiting ladies present for the initial opening of the Croquet > Club, iiic ladies provided a very enjoyable afternoon tea, which was a large order, owing to the toig attendance, and was j much appreciated.
The president, Mr Clayton, on behalf Qi the Chib, gave a hearty welcome tq the visitors! He said) the club that day was entering on their 20h anniversary and he was pleased to st<_ a rink irom the Paimerston Club pres--1 ent as they had a lot to thank thai Club for in the commencement of their career. It wag ai member of t<h<u Club who. gave the Dixon Cup io. He. congratulated Levin on their win in the 'Triangular SlUem competition. In the future, he said, he would like to see the veterans catered lor, and suggested a ooimpetition for Ferns, or even a cup. Ai present some of the veterans were t< i>e fqund on Jlie bank haying given way to the younger men, .and he iiop-t-a that something would be done to keep-them interested in the game. He then referred to the opening of the Croquet Club, stating that the Club's interests were the bowlers' interests." In conclusion he read a telegram from Mr and Mrs Murphy, their secretary, wishing the Club a success-" ful season.
An adjournment was then made to the Croquet Club's\ green where Mr Beard, the Club's president, in. a lew well chosen words, welcomed the visiting ladies who had come from Levin, Otaki and Foxton. He said the Club was the sister cluib to the Bu.viing Club and they .recognised it and were grateful to the 'bowlers and fei.» they had their backing in anything they did. The club was making a good start, having oyer 40 memoers and he trusted all would spend an enjoyable time- He then called on Mrs Beard to drive the first shot, alter which he declared the season open. The bowlers then returned to their gire'en and after Mrs Clayton hau thrown the "kitty" and rolled the firs; bowl, their season was declared open. Play was then commenced, there being twelve rinks engaged, the following being the scores Of the varioub rinks:—; l

Shannon: Wiggins, huuson, Beard, Shannqh (skip) 16. Levin: Bull, Challies, Derham, Su-ian (skip) 25 v. Cooper, Butt. Hook, Ga-gU-ardi (skip) 21. Otaki: Kupa Hawea, Whiteman, Webster, Bills 24 v. Foxton: Holimgs, Winstanley, Walton, McColl 12. in the evening the ladies of the Croquet Club held a dance in the Parish HaU which, though not largely attended proved most enjoyable.
