ORCHESTRAL CONCERT.
The management of the orchestral and vocal concert in aid of. the Foxton Silver Band, which was held in the Maoriland Theatre on Tuesday night were unfortunate, in that the evening proved very wet, preventing mahy from attending, and as a result there was only a fair attendance. Tlie orchestral items by an orchestra numBering over sixty instrumentalists, to accommodate which the stage had. to he enlarged, was the main, mature ol the concert. The massed musicians were under the conductorship of Miss M. Healey,’ of Wellington, their numbers being much appreciated by the audience, vocal items were rendeieu by Mr Howard Hunter, who was in splendid, voice and had to respond to a recall, Miss Aim, Miss F. Chalk (Foxton) and Messrs Cr-onquest, Barron, and Golder, and a monologue (humorous) Mr Barnett. The little Misses J, and F. Thompson in a humorous duet in character, in which they made several local hits were deservedly recalled. Master Owen Cahill gave a very clever contortion act, following a much appreciated turn with his two-well-trained dogs, both of Which Received well-merited apI plause. Instrumental solos were played by a number of Miss Neale’s pupils, which reflected credit upon her ability a<s a teacher. A party of young ladies from* Foxton appeared in t’he ballet “From Here to Shanghai,” and were well received.
During the concert the Mayor (Mi Murdoch), in a (brief address, thanked those who had attended in assisting the band in their effort to raise funds. He said tide Band had always helped Shannon functions gratuitously and willingly and by assisting the band they were placing it in a better position to help Shannon without charge. He hoped that the cordial relations now existing between Shannon and Foxton, would long remain, and that the present concert would inspire fresh enthusiasm in musical matters. Mr Aitchison, president of the Band, in returning thanks, emphasised the need to cooperate in making the band Which is a district one, a success, both financially andj from a musical point. A special tribute is due to Mr Goltier for the enthusiasm displayed by him in promoting these combined concerts, which will help considerably to arouse interest in musical matters in tlhe district.
