BUILDING SOCIETY SUGGESTED , for shannon. At last meeting of the Shannon Chamber of Commerce, Mr Hyde said Sliunnon could carry a population of another 300 to ,400. people if they could get houses.. All 'arouiid them men were to be found working who had their homes in other towns, because they could not get a house in Shannon. He said therg were owners of laud here who would build if they could get the finance. It was hard to borrow money at a reasonable rate of interest and therefore it was difficult to know how tp overcome file problem; He hud been wondering if the town was big enough to run a' Building Society. This was the best means he knew”of by which a. person could build a home. If they could run. a group of 500 shares this would produce £I3OO the first year. There are plenty who will build if they could get the money. Mr* Gunning said the standard of building to-day wag too high for the person who was trying to get a home. He advocated building a decent threeroomed house in such a way that it could be added to from lime to-time. This, class of house could he built at a reasonable price and let, at a, fair rental. .As regards forming a. Building Society in Shannon he thought it would take on and be a /boon to the town. - ■;■■■ ' Mr Hyde then gave notice of motion that the Chamber take up the matter of forming a terminating Building Society, in Shannon.
