ORGANISER'S SERVICES.
FARMERS' UNION DISCUSSION
The question of continuing the services oi tlie organiser for me Mana-wai-u provincial district of the New •Zealand Fanners' Union, in view of tlie financial position, was discussed at length at Saturday's meeting of the executive of that body at PaJmerston. The chairman (Mr O. iP. Lynch) expressed the opinion that it would be impossible to carry on with tlhe present system of organisation in view of the financial position. He had had a
chat with tire organiser, Mr Marriott, and that gentleman had stated that he wanted either a. twelve months' engagement as from to-day io.r a termination of his agreement. Mr Marriott, who was present at the meeting, said he would withdraw' while the discussion was being held, but he intimated that he was not prepared to accept any offer that day although, if the executive cared to make an offer he would be pleased to consider it.
Mr Marriott then retired and hi the ensuing discussion Mr L. Hi. Atkins moved that the organisation should be taken over by the four executives, Manawatu, Wellington Central, Wairarapa and Wanganui. If that were done, they could conjointly carry on with Mr Marriott's services.
Mr H. Bond, who seconded tlie motion, said he supported the proposal, although hei did not think it would do much goad. Mr Marriott was a man of personality and could get about the country. In the speaker's opinion,, Mr Marriott was a good man for Dominion organisation. It was 'mentioned that Mr Marriott, who. Mad been taken on for organisation work for two months, had secured 157 new members during that period.
Alter a full discussion the motion wa,s carried, and it was also decided that the neighbouring provincial executives be written to asking them to arrange for a conference to discuss the question of the appointment of an organiser for the whole of" their respective districts and, that if an arrangement was arrived at the Dominion executive be asked to give a concession for organising expenses. The chairman suggested that the conference, be held in a fortnight's time, and ho added that Mr Marriott might be asked to stop on for another month.
On this proposition being referred to Mr Marriott he intimated that he could not entertain it. He had his oAvn farm and he could not sell his cows, say, for a fortnight's work. He wanted some definite arrangement. If tlhe conference met and decided that it required his services as organiser he could let the executive have a decision on the matter.
Messrs 'Lynch, Balsillie ' and J. A. McLeavey were appointed delegates to the proposed conference.
