Rovers were again defeated last Saturday—this time by Shannon—by 12 points to 6, after having the best of the play for two-thirds of the game. Two Wanderers players., Stoker and Tatana, brought in as substitutes, did yeoman service for the side, and certainly kept the Shannon score within reasonable bounds. Rovers led off well and had their
heavier but less nippy opponents packed up in their own 25 for the x first quarter of an hour. A number of spirited rushes led by Moynihan went down to solid tackling and play returning to Shannon’s side. A.. Short picked up 10 yards out- and hurled himself across the line to score the first try for Rovers. The kick failed. The sun was hampering Shannon considerably and although their backs appeared to have more combination than those of their opponents, faulty passing spoiled a number of fine opportunities. A scramble in, Rovers territory gave the opportunity for Shannon’s first score. Rowlands picked up fifteen yards out and. finding himself blocked by the packed team of the opposition, dashed across the field and potted a spectacular goal. Score 4—3. Stoker, playing at five-eighth, kicked off for Rovers. A long kick sent the ball well up field and following up with a fine burst of speed, with Tatana alongside, he took the ball right through and scored in the corner.
Rovers were up to this time having the best of the game, which was more of a good-natured scramble than an exhibitions of football. The greater weight of the Shannon pack, however; began to tell "from this time and although Rovers played with determination to the end, they were unable to prevent an additional two scores being registered against them, Sands and Dalzell being responsible for these. The second try was converted, the final score being 12—6. Mr. J. Smith refereed. SHANNON 14 v. MOIUTOA NIL. For the Junior, Championship game at Shannon the weather was ideal, but the ground was heavy. Moutoa met Shannon, both teams being minus a couple .of their main players, but nevertheless the game was keenly contested and in some stages exciting. Siiaimon kicked off punctually to time witii the wind behind them, .Moutoa. started a forward rush hut Hunt picked up well and lound the line. From a Jirie-uut Shannon became aggressive hut .a had pass by George spoilt a chance, - Shannon kept up the 'attack and P. Morgan worked his way ‘ over. Gill’s kick at the gaol failed. From the kick-off the play was mosn, confined tq the forwards on both sides lor some time. Hunt took a mark in front of the'goal and hud a drop kick but without success. Moutoa then took a hand, Morgan, Newtih and McSweeney being prominent on several occasions, Newth was nearly over a couple of times, hut the Shannon defence was sound. In the second spell it was thought Moutoa would have a
chance. They made determined efforts to reduce the deficiency, hut they were met with solid defence. Shannon juniors are always a good second spell side hut on the day their game was not of their best. The backs mulled several passes,, which might have meant much. Holden scored under the posts, Gill’s kick being successful. Later Tovey go. away with the s ball and, beating several opponents, passed to Robinson, who scored. The kick at goal toy McEiwan failed. Just on the call of time Hunt registered a fine try which MeEwan failed to convert. The game,
thus ended: Shannon 14, Moutoa nil, Mr A. McDonald was referee. P, Morgan retired during the game through a ricked knee.
