STRANDED IN CANADA.
FIVE NEW ZEALANDERS. MONEY LEFT IN AUCKLAND. ' VICTORIA (8.C.), June 14. Sailing from Auckland on May 13 by the steamer Niagara, five men came to Canada to secure land, but'are now stranded here. Their case has sojue unexplained features. Altogether they had about £4OO, which they deposited in jhe Canadian Government Office in Auckland, and for which they accepted personal cheques on Vancouver hanks, signed by an official with whom they negotiated for the land.
It s.eems that they first visited the office on the last day of March, but on April 1 the man in question left fhe service of the Government, whose officials are, however, unable to explain why he was doing business in the Government’s office in the month of May. The Canadian Government will probably make the cheques good and later seek- an adjustment with the former official personally.
