THE CARNIVAL.
A SUCCESSFUL EFFORT. The final effort to- raise funds by title Bowling, Gro.quet and Tennis Clubs took place at the Maoriland Theatre on Tuesday evening when the combined committees held a carnival- They were, divided into four sections—Green, (Rleds, (Purple aaidV of whom ran a stall and side show. There was a splendid response by tihe public, the haU being well filled, and judging by the reports from the respective, stallholders, those present must have' 'been generous with their money. Each stall was nicely decorated depicting' line colours of the holders, and. being laden with tempting and useful goods. Each of the stallholders and their many helpers worked hard in disposing of their wares and in running games aaid competitions; the refreshment stajl in Charge of Mrs Lauryig doing a big 4 ■business.
Although the final figures are not not yet known the effect made by the combined clubs will prove very satisfactory and the various committees are to be complimented on the harmonious manner in which they have worked together to bring about such a successful issue.
During the evening a" tug-ofwar between boys from the local school caused a lot of amusement., as did the men's hat-trimming contest, some of the men proving they were milliners of no mean ability. .This event was judged by Mrs L. H. Martin, who awarded the prize to Mr. W. Quariie. Following are the results of the competitions held by the different stall-holders : Reds' Stall: Doll, weight 3|lbs, Mr J. Murray j dinner, weight 6|lbs, Mesdames Aim and Lauryig tied; goose, 221hs, Mr J. Feetham; pair fowls, 21J lbs, Mr Melles; cushion No. 13, Mrs Terry. -' '• Purples.—Doll's name "Delphine," Mr Bartholomew; teapot 53, Mrs Watkins ; doll's bedstead, 'No. 31, Mc P. v Ousey; nail driving (gents), Mr G. Watkins; nail driving •(ladies), Mrs Balfour l; Mrs Patton % Gold.—Football, Mr Alexander;
child's chair, "Lily," Mrs B. Spencer. Greens.—Dinner 66, Mrs McGregor; < tea 50, Mrs C. Easton; breakfast, 31, Mrs H. Woodmas; butter dish 90, Miss Gunning; chest of tea, 124, J. Bennett; cake, 41bs 7£ozs, Mrs Satherley; tyre 50, Miss King; 251 b bag flour 44, Mrs F. Webb; Doulton bowl 19, Mrs Martin; air gun 25, Mr Riches; sack of coal, 25(21b5, Mr J. Hamilton. The following are the-names of the stallholders:—
Gold: Mesdames Laurvig, Merwoqd, Riches and Bishop, Misses M. and G. Brown, Ryan, and Butt, and Mr Riches.
Purples: Mesdames Boyis, >Te(rr.y, and Whibley, and Misses Terry, Quarrie, Pickles, M. Curran, R. Roach, Gordon and Watterston and Messrs Quarrie and Brown. Reds: Mesdames B. Spencer, Murray, Watterston, Aim and Cronquest .arid Messrs Murray, Watterston, B. Spencer and Alloway. Greens: Mesdames E. ■ spencer, Morgan, Beard, Franks, Balfour and Roach and Messrs E. Spencer and Morgan. Owing to one of the books not being handed in in time the drawing of the results in the knitted garment competition did not take place until Wednesday evening,, when it was held in the Council Chambers in the presence of the Mayor and others.
