THE AMERICAN WAY.

"DUNNING" A CUSTOMER. A Dunedin resident who sent lor a book to an American firm under' the "approval" scheme received an advice that the book had been dispatched but probably owing to. delay in the post it did not arrive until six weeks later, consequently the firm evidently thought that he was not a good payer, and he has received' the following letter, although the firm by this time, will doubtless have the cash:

"'Dear friend,—You might have thought that it was only my firnit you owed money. You Qwe it also the the little stenographer, whQ got a position here to help support her sick father. You owe it to the widowed mother who works here, the only breadwinner now ofther family. You owe it to me, a, young man endeavouring to make for (himself a place in this business, and who is kept from succeeding because you and others Will not pay. "There are no millionaires in this Arm, which is composed of honest, hard-working men families to support and expenses to meet just like yourself, men who started to sell to you by mail with the certainty that you would pay the amount. "You may say,"'The small amount I owe you won't make any differenced but it does. You imagine that tlhe sale is added to the list of sales to others who are cleafci forgetful or, downright dishonest, and away go pro-. \ fits. The firm is forced to cut expenses, the breadwinners will not ! be paid and the firm is not in a position to advance salaries, all because you ner glected to do what you gave your word to do. Just put yourself In my. ' place, or in the place of those working here, and you will not hold hack your payment a minute longer.—Yours for a square deaj."

The mildness of the present winter is attributed by a Christchurch resident to the ice packs in the Antarctic not having broken. He informed a Christchurch paper that the breaking of the pack governed to a large extent climatic conditions in this country.
