MATERNAL SUFFERINGS.
(To the Editor.) S|ir,--"Mother iof Fiv,e" says tihati her only object in writing is to praise dp the St. Helens Hospital for its cheapness, . .as so suitable for the working man's wife. Also she has spoken of its good food and attendance. Who criticised""these matters? They are guitei outside the important point, which is: Of what use are these to the poor sufferers from the cruelties perpetrated on (these working men's wives? If "Mother of Five" can say that she was one of those unhappy wretches held down while stitches were sewn into the most tender part of the human body,- or if she were even one of the victims of three days' mortal agony she would have some right to speak. As it is, she has none. The only result of her letters would be to .'burke needed enquiry, and prevent light being thrown on these things, 'and a better regime instituted. But happily, information from inside is given by a medical authority, by nurses formerly employed there, and toy one victim herself, and these render "Mother of Five's" letters harmless.—l am, etc., GOMMONI9ENSE. P. S.—What right has any man (medical or otherwise) to deny to suffering women, the relief provided by God or nature (which you please) in anaesthetics, for just these emergencies? It should be for the woman herself (not the doctor) to decide whether she will choose a peaceful passing, or lingering in torment.
