BUYING A KNIGHTHOOD.
PARKINSON AWARDED £3OOO
1 LONDON, July 2. Mr Justice Lush, suinmiug up m tile case in which Lieut.-Colonel Parkinson sued Ernest Harrison, manage ing-director of a college ambulance, and the college, for £3OOO damages, alleging that fraudulent representations had been made that his donations would secure a knighthood for him, adversely commented on defendant’s refusal to testify, despite the fact that he was charged with a serious fraud. The case against him seemed substantial. It would be idle to pretend that many people did not make munificent donations for the purpose of obtaining titles-, .but con-' tracts for the purchase of a title were against public policy. , The jury returned a verdict that 1 Harrison falsely and fraudulenly pro-' mised to obtain Parkinson a title, but that he was authorised to so act by the college -ambulance. They, found in favour of the plaintiff for £3OOO. His Honour, being disposed to consider the agreement between the parties illegal and tainted, said he would hear legal argument at the end of July. .
