THIRDS. 1 OTAKI 11, TE HORO 0. | PARAPARAUMU 16, HUI MAI 8. i | WANDERERS (17) V. OTAKI (6). 1 One of the best games witnessed in the district tnis season was the above match, played at Otaki on Saturday, while the attendance constituted a record. , Levin set the ball in motion, but, Hopi, by a serviceable kick, sent the oval but at the half-way flag, where some fine line-out ana scrum play was witnessed. A free-kick to Otaki saw them on the attack, and Levin accepted a force down, and saved the situation. Otaki continued aggressive but a free kick to Levin relieved .the pressure, - and the ball was earned to mid-field, after a series of lineouts and scrums. Gradually Levin were forced back, but Stoker, by nice play, cleared bis line. Then D’Ath put in fine play, in consequence of, which Levin-were again hard pressed. The defence, however, was sound, Jacob with at good run carried the bail to ha,li-way and then transferred .to Wilson, who nnsseu, but Winiatu kicked out and saved. Again Levin were pressed but Wilson became prominent, and as, the result of fine play, carried tilie bail up the field. Darcy D’Ath saved, alter ‘which . give-and-take play iollowed, the hall eventually going into Levin territory. ‘ Here W. D’Atn made a great bid for the line, but again the defence was good. Smith eventually - carried the ball to Otaki quarters, but good play by Tahiwi and UtikU relieved. Stoker and Mollison then became conspicuous in a loose rush, but the Otaki forwards headed a rush to the opposite end of the field, where Prim marked. His attempt to pilot the hall between the uprights was a feeble one. Play traversed up and down the field with' a series of loose rushes, and eventually McDonald and Mollison were obliged to. stop a stubborn onslaught by the Otaki forwards. Then Levin became aggressive, and Mollison, after a nice run, passed to Wilson, 'who missed. From a free kick that followed off-side play Jacob had a shot at goal, but missed. Levin continued on the attack, but fine play by Hopi and Takarei relieved. Stoker then headed for Otaki territory, but ’was nicely collared by Takarei before reaching the line. The attack continued and Stoker and Smith were noticeable. Tatana then became possessed of the ball, after which T. Winiata raced round the blind side- of- the' scrum and scored. Jacob missed the uprights. Levin 3, Otaki nil. - , Darcy D’Ath, - after taking a nice pass from Tafhiwi, put in a good run, after which Moses, Tahiwi and Hopi indulged in nice play. From the reverse that followed Levin attacked strong and Mollison nearly scored. The attack continued and Jacob, .grabbing the ball from the ruck, "made for the line and then passed to Mollinson, who lost the .ball as he fell over the line. Otaki were now having an anxious time, but ' Talhiwi, equal ,to the occasion, made a nice run down the field, but in attempting to kick over the head of tbe° full-back, dropped the ball. Gradually Levin worked back and Utijcu, in' saving from a hard rush, fell on the ball. He was immediately pehalised, and Jacob kicked an easy goal. Jacob, Mollison, and Winiata. then followed with good play, but a fine rush by the Otaki forwards reversed the order of affairs and enabled Tuna to have a
shot, at goal. He missed, and halit'untj wus called.
iiie second sp.eli was also a stub- 1 bomly-contested une, and play was 1 iirst at one end, then the other. Early ’ in the spell Tuna had. an unsuccess- 1 iul shot at goal put faulty play saw * Levin oil the attack. Tahiwi, UIiKU, 1 and 13. D’Ath, however, saved the 1 situation, and the latter, a little later,; 1 nearly scored, alter the bail being 1 sent out from Moses and Prim. Jacob. 1 and Wilson then indulged'in a neat J piece of passing, and Otuki sav-, ' ed by accepting a force. Moll is on' 1 itihen, made a bold bid for the line, but ! D’Atii saved in flue style, and in turn 1 put in a good run. The hall, however, hovered about Otaki’s 25’s when I). D’Ath made a sensational run of some 75 yards .and scored amidst; cheers. He was chased by Winiata' ' and Stoker, but the fleet-footed Otakiite was more than equal to. the occasion; The try f was certainly well-de-' served. Tuna made a poor attempt' to convert, 6—3. .j Jacob headed the next rush, and' while Otaki were on the defence Le- ; vin made frantic attempts to score. A’ free kick saw Winiata pilot the ball between the uprights, 9—3 , Jacob scored within the next minute' and goaled, 14—?. Aft free kick td Otaki saw Moses | kick a neat goal, all scores being , within the space of a few minutes,) 14 — 6. | Flay shortly- afterwards scored, but Jacob missed the goal, 17—<6. | Wallace D’Ath then put in good play, but Levin pressed and Jacob had a place at’goal. He missed,-but took the return, kick and potted; narrowly missing the uprights. "Time was shortly afterwards called. '
For the winners both backs and forwards played splendidly.' The vanguard was good, but the backs were better. Mollison, Wilson, McDonald, and Winiata were perhaps the pick. For Otaki the D’Ath brothers and Prim were good, and received good support from Takarei. The forwards grafted hard, and. to individualise would be: unfair as all were of equal merit.' Marino, however, was, perhaps the pick. Mr Horo Karauti was referee. His decisions did not suit a certain section of the Otaki public who were inclined to show disapproval. , * - There' were no gaines played - in Shannon on Saturday, the seniors journeying .to Foxton, while <ithe ■ Thirds went to .Levin, the Juniors drawing a bye. 0 ■ - At the first signs of Influenza take "NAZOL”—a simple, safe, speedy- and snrp specific.
