This game wa s played on the Domain at Tokornaru in fine weather, but / the ground was in a wet state as the result of the recent rain, which made the ball difficult to handle and the going, heavy. There was a good attendance of spectators, a large number journeying from- Shannon. Groat rivalry exists between these two teams and neither, were lacking .for suporters. Taken right through the game : was a hard one and keenly fought out. Shannon was very weak in the back division, the bulk of the work falling to Hunt and W. Gray, while the forwards to a man played splendidly and it was mainly through* their efforts that Shannon got their win. Had the ball not been so greasy it is just possible Toltomaru would have reversed-the result as they possess a good back division, but play among the backs would > out of the question. Tokomaru’s full hack, Judd, played a very safe game, while Rowlands and Herini saved their teams s repeatedly when the Shannon forwards swept down on them. N. Dalzell was the most prominent' of the |f or wards. Fitzgerald and M.
Moore were the pick of the Shannon forwards. The game opened with . Tokornaru attacking vigorously and the first few minutes looked as though • they >vere going, to walk, all over Shannon, but the f latter managed to hold • theni from scorig; although they were hard pressed. What looked a certain score for Tokornaru was missed by W. George.hanging on to,the leather instead of sending it on to his riian. Soon after this. Shannon got going and carried play into Tokomdru’s 25 where fromu' a dribbling rush Jamieson scored. ’Hunt failed to add the extra points. Shannon kept up the attack and from , a scrum in Tokornaru territory, Hunt receiving the ■ ball, cross-kicked and Fitzgerald and Torrey, following up fast, dribbled it to the line where the latter scored from a scramble. It was contended by some of the Tokornaru players that one of their men forced first but the referee’s decision was against them. On resuming after the spell. Tokornaru repeated their performance of the opening of the game by attacking strongly and finally Rowlands securing the leather, sent it out*to K. Whyte on the wing, who' beat the opposition and scored. He failed to add the major points.-Toko-maru again became aggressive and were awarded a free kick in Shannon’s ,25, K. Whyte took the kick, but missed. During the last 20 minutes of the 'game shannon took a turn .at attack and kept Tokornaru busy defending their line ,and on 1 three occasions were within an ace of scoring. The game -ended Shannon 6, Tokoma.ru 3. Mr Grimstone controlled the game. WERAROA. 13, OTAKI 3. The gpine - Otaki-Weraroa was one of the best displays seen in Otaki for some timie, 'but somewhat , marred by rough play at. frequent intervals. Fot the first ten Otaki had Weraroa penned un the . • line hut could not ..penetrate lha defence, of the latter team. The Wen - r.oa forwards were playing well and from a forward rush Ale Herron se-
cured the ball at the half way and racing lor the line scored a spectacular, try.” Hope’s kidk failed. Otaki; as a wnoie wer playing well and some nice passing rushes were seen, but the Weraroa defence was solid. Mciierron and Hakaraia., the Weruroa hokers, were securing the bail in the scrums and thougn the Packs were handling it well they couid not penetrate Otaivi's defence. From a scramble on the line Webbey seemed the leather and scored Otaki t onlv try, a fairly easy kick failed, naif time soundeu shortly aiterwards. The second spell opened with Weraroa on the attack hut the Otaki backs were playing well. D’Ath. was playing a good game on the wing, likewise his club mate Marsh on the other. From a free kick in Otaki’s 25 MoHerron had a siiot at goal but the ball was charged down. , At this pomt We raroa had the best of the game and were tiring their opponents by solid tackling. From a scrum Weraroa secured the ball and one of the finest passing rushes of the day took place. AH the backs bandied the ball and Churchill on the wing scored Weraroa’s second try: • Uiy with a good kick piloted the. leather across me bar. • ■ The white forwards were continually breaking through the green pack whoe backs at this stage could not get going at all. From a scramble on tlie half way line Williams secured the ball and • sidestepping .three 'Otaki men raced for the line with half the OtaiU team in vain pursuit. He grassed the ball between, the posts, but was recalled on account, of an Otaki' forward being off side. At this stage a little unnecessary hard play .was taking place in which both teams were offending. Weraroa had toeir opponents on the defensive continually but for some time could not break through,-'but at last their efforts were rewarded. From a scrum in the green twenty-five Beta secured and sidestepping five opponents scored a nice try. Udy with a, great kick once more added the major points.. Shortly afterwards the whistle sounded Ml time. ! There were frequent stops on account of men being ( knocked out owing to tlie over-indulgence/ of rough play. For the winners it is difficult to separate any individual player lor they all played well. For the losers Hakaraia. and Moreno in the forwards played well as did Utiku, D’Ath, Moses and Marsh in the backs. WANDERERS v. SHANNON. The Wanderers-Shahnon match on Saturday was ai disappointing, exhibition of football, Shannon being outclassed in every department of the game. Wanderers opened up with the sun at their backs and soon had their opponents penned up iln their territory, scoring within five minutes of tlie kick-off and continuing to score when they liked afterwards. Moynihan, Eagle and Lenihan were the only Shannon players who looked as if they had ever*played the game before and Wanderers merely had a iday out practicing. The score 22—0 was a fair indication, of the relative merits of the teams.
