DOMAIN COMMITTEE MEETING.

A meeting: of the Domain Committee was held in the Council Chambers on Tuesday evening for the purpose of passing -iccounts for payment in respect to the tileiJdraining of the Recreation Ground, which has been completed. Tire Mayor (Mr Murdoch) presided there being present Messrs J. Burns, J. Cumm, j. Crowther, W. Ona,rrie. E. Butt. .1. Beard, H. Hook, and J. T. Bovis (secretary).

The secretary reported that 44 chains of draining had beem completed at a cost of £9l 4s, the original estimate being £B6 for 40 chains.

The accounts were passed for payment.

Mr Curran said now the work was finished, the ground was still sloppy after fl\e recent rain and he was of opinion that the work a,s it now stands was not going to be satisfactory and the only remedy would be to ' subsoil it, which meant that a lot of sand would-- have to be carted and mixed and dug in. The whole -trouble was that the clay was too hear the top. The Mayor suggested an open drain being put in at the top end of the ground and the outlets on the sides cleaned out.

It was decided, that the Mayor's suggestion be forwarded to the Borough Council asking them to do the work ai% early as possible. The Mayor stated the present hedge around the. ground was decayed and lie recommended that it he taken out I and a new hedge put in about four or , five feet back from the present oneMr Butt did not -approve of tha money being spent on this- work as it had been raised for making improvements on the inside of the ground. Several of those present expresses tiho opinion that it would he impossible to get a. good hedge to grow so long as the trees axe there. Mr Hook inoved that the fence he made cattle proof a.nd that nothing be done with the hedge a.nd that the' work of ploughing, levelling, grassing, etc., be gone on wltlfr. .'This wfas "algreed to 'a.nd Messrs Cumm and Butt were appointed to fake charge! of "the work. - Mr Bovis suggested that the public be given an opportunity to forward suggestions for improvements- after the ground has toeen put in order. ' j Mr Beard agreed with the idea and if such was advertised he thought the committee might get something valuable out of the lot. It wa« decided when the ground

has been put in order to call'for stiggestions from the pubfl'ic as to how best to: beautify the grouds at a cost not to exceed £350.
