CRIME DETECTION WONDERS IN THE LABORATORY.

Fascinating stories of how science aids in the demotion of crime were •told in a lecture delivered at Bath by Dr. R W. Crossley-Holland, joint secretary of the Pharmaceutical Conference.

Illustrating how photographs taken by ultra-violet light will often reveal details quite invisible in ordinary white light,.-ho sakl that large number of French War Bonds were stolen recently alter they had been paid and cancelled. A forger, by means of bleaching chemicals, removed ' the hand-written date of payment, and tlie printed date of issue. He then printed in. a new date of issue and presented the bonds for payment. Payment was made, but presently suspicion arose. One of the "suspect" bonds was .submitted to the ultra-violet ray apparatus, with the startling result that the bleached-out date of original payment showed up clearly, and the false date of issue which had been substituted for the original date of issue did not show up at all. The result was the conviction of the manipulator of the bonds.
