MANAWATU LICENSING COMMITTEE

ANUUAfL MEETING. Tlie annual meeting of the above was held in tlie Courthouse at Foxton on .Wednesday, before Mr J. L. stout' (chairman), and Messrs J. H. Perritt, J. E. Walker, K. Bryant, and W. Murdoch. NEW LICENSES. Tlie police report being favourable, new licenses were \granted t,o the following:— Mary Griffin, Manawatu Hotel, Foxton; H. J. (D. McManaway (Mr R. Raugitikei Hotel, Bulls;. C C. Price (Mr Mackayj, Criterion Hotel, Bulls; James Curran (Mr Adams), Albion Hotel, Shannon; B. Dooley (Mr Mackay), Junction Hotel, SansonW. Speechlay, Endymion Hotel, Awahuri; 11. F. Preston (Mr BergTn), Post office Hotel, Foxton. RENEWALS. J. Bebbi'ngton, lor<svhom Mr Cohen, of Wanganui, and Mr Adams, of Levin, appeared, applied lor a renewal of the license for the Grand Hotel, Levin.

The police report in this case was adverse. Reference was made to fines,inflicted' against the proprietor of ..this hotel last October. Mr Cohen said that the. fines had not been very beavy in the case referred to and lie lhat the Magistrate could not have taken a very grave view of the "cases. The chairman: 1 know exactly what. vJews he took, J, was the magistrate. ■ ? Continuing, Mr Cohen said that the licensee had kept a good hotel for tlie past three years and " three months. The police reports' had previously been good. The chairman said that there was no question raised as to the way in which the hotel was conducted. The fault lay ,in the bar supervision, which was far too lax.

Mr Cohen said that he felt sure that the licensee would benefit by the comment of the chairman of tlie committee and would keep stricter supervision -in future. The application was granted.

Police reports being favourable, renewals were granted to the following :

E. J. Nash. (Mr Adams), Levin Hotel, Levin; W: Kirkland (Mr Bergin)., Whyte's Hotel, Foxton; R. Palmer (Mr Bergin), Family Hotel, Foxton ; T. P'. Moynihan, - Manawatu Hotel (Shannon).

A renewal of license was granted W. Bull Ltd., of Levin, as a wholesale wine and spirit .merchant for whom Mr Adams appeared:-
