The proprietors of the Maori land Pictures have imported a new style of arc which came to hand last week, and a. trial run was given yesterday. Tlie great advantage of the new arc is that’ whereas the usual kind uses ;JU amps, the new one shows an even better picture with 8 amps. Thus a, great saving is made in the running cost. The arc is. the first oi its kind in the Mana.watu, if not in New Zealand, and picture proprietors are coming to -Shannon- from as far as Taranaki and llawkes Buy to see it iipuse. They are 'to arrive on Wednesday next when a private screening will be given them in the afternoon. A I'eu- • lure of the arc is that, daylight screenings are as good a£ at night. Shannon is certainly progressive as l'ai his its picture theatre concerned.

There is as a rule nothing to excite special attention in the “slogans” which appear in the defacing machine through which letters are put by post offices; usually they are merely s terse •commands to visit the* exhibition or the carnival or something of the kind (says tile Christchurch Press). Amongst our mail on Wednesday, however was a letter irom Washington,, issued by the “Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom,” which had its title and address printed on the envelope, together with the dates of its Congress and International school, and, in large type, “Stop the.'Next War.” The slogan in the defacing machine’ in the Washington post" office that day happened to be and was printed very clearly, .“Let’s go! Citizens’ Military Training Camp.” ■ _ _
