ROMAN CATHOLIC VIEW.
Considerable sensation lias been caused in Roman Catholic circles in the Diocese of ‘Nottingham, whi£h cmbraces several of the Midland Counties of England, by the attitude towards mixed marriages which the Bishop of the diocese, the Right Rev. Thomas Dunn, intimated in his Lenten Pastoral he intends to adopt in the future. The Bishop drew attention to the fact that last year there were in the diocese 315 mixed marriages as against 228 Catholic ones. He regards this as evidence of the deplorable ignorance and laxity which exist, and adds: "Nor do I blame only the young people and their parents. With shame and with remorse I blame myself for the ease >vith which these dispensations were issued, and, in a minor degree, I blame also tlic clergy who ask. ed me to grant them. The fact is that mixed marriages have come to be regarded as quite an ordinary thing, and applications to the bishop are looked upon as a mere formality. Both these things must now'be checked." As a disciplinary measure the Bishop .intimated that chancel of the Cathedral would no longer be available for such marriages, but they might take place at the altar in any of the other chapels except that of the Blessed Sacrament.
